Dear Friend,
For months leading up to election day, The Trevor Project has helped LGBTQ youth process their intense emotions around voting, this election cycle, and the political climate. Today, as the results of the presidential election remain uncertain, the young people we serve continue to experience a wide range of emotions.
Over the last 24 hours, LGBTQ youth reaching out to our crisis services are reporting that they are scared, worried, and anxious. We know these feelings can have a negative impact on their mental health, and that’s why it’s so important that we continue to provide our suicide prevention and crisis intervention services to LGBTQ youth 24/7 and for free.
While many LGBTQ youth feel uncertain about their futures, I also want to share what The Trevor Project has been able to accomplish over the last four years, regardless of the political climate. Just this year, we helped The National Suicide Hotline Designation Act become law; it was the first LGBTQ-inclusive bill to pass Congress unanimously, and will save countless young LGBTQ lives. And since 2016, we’ve helped pass legislation protecting LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy in 17 states and 82 cities.
We also joined our peers to oppose more than 100 bills that are harmful to transgender and nonbinary youth, and worked with education systems across the country to introduce LGBTQ competent suicide prevention policies in schools. I’m also proud that our leading research on LGBTQ youth mental health and suicide prevention continues to be cited by federal agencies, legislators, and in amicus briefs nationwide, including a case being heard in the Supreme Court today.
These achievements are a result of Trevor’s hard work and the belief that our mission to end suicide among LGBTQ youth is non-partisan. We will continue to work with policymakers in every state and from every political party to ensure LGBTQ youth know they are never alone.
No matter what the outcome of the election is, we will continue to be there for LGBTQ youth with a clear message: you are beautiful the way that you are, you are deserving of love and respect, and, most importantly, you are never alone.
Thank you for being part of The Trevor Project’s valued community of supporters, and for your commitment to LGBTQ young people. We could not protect LGBTQ youth without your continued support.
