Stand With Activists And Defend The Future Of Democracy ([link removed][UNIQID])
Dear John,

Millions of votes are still being counted. But the President of the United States has declared victory and is pursuing an agenda to stop legitimate votes from being counted. While many around the world have known this feeling, of being silenced and negated, of being asked to accept an illegitimate act of authoritarianism and patriarchy, this act from the supposed “leader of the free world” is unacceptable and extraordinarily concerning.
I feel concerned for the future of democracy. I’m worried and wondering how we will get through the uncertainty of the next few weeks. We are now faced with playing a waiting game. Waiting for results, waiting for a glimmer of hope and relief.

Amidst all this uncertainty, this tenuous and fragile feeling that the world stands on the brink of enabling more hate and oppression – I find strength in our certainties. I am certain that feminist activists will not wait. I am certain of the resilience of activists to hold their ground and speak out on behalf of those whose rights have been under attack. The #MeToo movement. The March for Our Lives against gun violence. The Women’s March. The school climate strikes. Black Lives Matter protests. Led by women and trans people of color, they organized and mobilized, sharpening their demands, and growing their power. I am certain that together they show us and the rest of the world that we are never going to relinquish our rights without a fight. Stand up for the fight by supporting activists. So today, I will remind myself to take a breath and acknowledge that it’s okay to take a pause and mentally prepare for what lies ahead. I will reach for the inspiration that has gotten me through so many other difficult days. I will remind myself of the power of hope and I recite – out loud, for good measure – “The events and victories that feminist activists have achieved have had a direct impact on my own life and the lives of those I love.” Feminist organizing has and will continue to lead the way. Over the past four years, UAF has made over 225 grants to activists in the US who were pushing for change.

This work will continue over the weeks, months, and years to come. Together, we know that we have some mountains to climb and that some mountains are steeper than they should be. Whether your mountains are preparing to take to the streets, the keyboard, or the courthouses – know that you are not alone in this fight.

UAF will be here – mobilizing our resources for our movements. Help us prepare to resource the courageous feminist activists whose leadership, strategic organizing, and absolute refusal to give up inspires us all.
With gratitude,
Kate Kroeger, Executive Director of UAF
