Against the odds, George Gascón defeated Jackie Lacey and will be the new District Attorney of Los Angeles.
I said to our staff and my family and friends that for me, this was the single most important election of 2020 — even more than the White House — as far as justice goes.
Our organization, Real Justice, raised and spent $642,252.29 on advertising, billboards, texting, staff, and more. The most we ever raised and spent in 4 years. And despite being outspent by the police unions and DA unions in a major way, we still won. The people have spoken.
Los Angeles incarcerates more people than almost any COUNTRY in the world. The LAPD kills more people per year than almost any country in the world.
And while we will still have to hold George Gascón accountable, he is going to radically change the system from the inside out in HUNDREDS of different ways.
Thank you to all of our donors and volunteers at Real Justice. Your generosity allowed us to spend the money it took to win. And of course, thank you to the voters who did the right thing here. You did this.
This victory is proof of what’s possible when we channel our grassroots power to create the change we believe in. Today, we celebrate this win, but the Real Justice team isn’t slowing down now – far from it. I can’t wait to share with you our next plans for more HUGE opportunities to transform local justice systems.
