Dear Transparency Advocate,
The ballots have been cast and with this moment comes a heightened sense of excitement and anxiety, especially with many outcomes still undecided. There’s much on the line for our democracy this election.
One of those things is accountability which is at stake when transparency — our right to know who’s funding whom and how the money is spent — is at risk. With unprecedented amounts of money flowing to politicians, it is even more imperative that we know who stands to gain and lose after all the votes are counted. Witness:
* $14 billion spent on the election: the cost of running has spiked in 2020, putting a run for election even further out of reach for good candidates that aren't rich themselves and don't swim in affluent circles.
* $3 billion spent by outside groups: groups that rely on a tiny number of powerful and deep-pocketed donors make up a huge share of 2020 campaign spending.
* Dark money groups donating to super PACs: this campaign maneuver means that, although super PACs technically disclose their sources, for some groups this “transparency” is a facade, as hundreds of millions of dollars will go undisclosed to the public.
OpenSecrets is the only free source for all of this information, and is poised to tell you whether it's the new normal. We slog through this vast data every day, and critically before your ballot is cast, to count the cash, track where it goes and dig deep to reveal its sources. Please join us in standing up for transparency – a foundation for a healthy democracy.
I stand for transparency ([link removed])
