John,

First of all: Thank you.

Last night, in my race for re-election to continue serving California in Congress, we won, delivering my Trump-emulating opponent a decisive defeat.

And it was thanks to the thousands of supporters like you who stood beside me and powered our grassroots campaign. I’m so thankful, and ready to keep fighting for you, for our healthcare, for our climate, and for our democracy during the next two years.

So thank you, thank you, thank you. Your support and confidence mean the world to me.

But here’s the more complicated piece to yesterday’s election. There’s still no winner in the presidential race, as millions of votes continue to be counted in a handful of key states. The momentum is with Joe Biden as they count mail ballots in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and elsewhere, but we will have to be patient.

This is perfectly normal, John. That’s how democracy works. You count the votes.

We knew going into this election, especially in the middle of a pandemic with more mail-in ballots than usual, that we likely would not have a clear winner on Election Day. We hoped otherwise but that was to be expected. Over the course of the next few days, states will finish counting votes and we will hopefully see Joe Biden declared the winner.

The President’s behavior was also predictable, after telegraphing for weeks he wouldn’t accept the results. Very early this morning, Trump falsely and dangerously claimed victory, painting legal mail-ballots as “fraud” and threatening to invalidate them through the Supreme Court.

Once again, the President is lying to the American people and acting like a would-be despot.

By prematurely crowning himself the winner of this election before all votes are counted, Trump is sowing distrust in our electoral system and our democracy itself, riling up his base, and creating yet another stress test for our democracy.

In fact, although Trump doesn’t seem to realize it, if they did stop counting the votes — Biden would be declared the winner. I’m hopeful when they do, in fact, finish counting all the ballots that will still be the case. Either way, we count them all.

Every vote counts, and we will count every damn vote.

Until those votes are counted and the results become clear, we must remain patient, ignore the noise, and be confident. We got the most votes so far, and just need to wait for the rest to be tallied.

Things often feel darkest right before the dawn, and I’m hopeful that soon, the sun will rise again. We just may have to wait a few days for the full picture to emerge.

Thank you for all you’ve done to stand up for our country, our Constitution, and our democracy.

I’ll be in touch with more updates soon.

— Adam
