National lockdown from Thursday 5 November
Preparing for National Lockdown tomorrow
**A message from City Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Sally Longford:**
sally longford
We find ourselves on the eve of a second national lockdown to help stem the spread of coronavirus. The new restrictions announced by Government involve staying at home except for specific purposes, avoiding meeting people you do not live with except for specific purposes and certain businesses and venues closing. Details of the national lockdown restrictions are available here [ [link removed] ].
The City Council has started to assess how the restrictions will affect its services, building and events, and will announce these details as soon as possible. It is of course deeply upsetting to find ourselves in the difficult situation again where we have to close or partially close many council services that we know our residents rely on. We have no other choice than to follow all the guidelines announced by the Government so we can help bring the virus back under control. I am sure that people will once again help each other and I urge everyone to stick to the restrictions and advice so we can look towards hopefully having a brighter December and festive period.
The Government paused the national Shielding programme in August, but the City Council is still offering support to people if they are isolating or need help, by calling 0115 915 5555. There is guidance to support people who are clinically extremely vulnerable available here [ [link removed] ]. The guidance explains people should:
* Meet as few people as possible
* Avoid non-essential travel
* Reduce trips to shops
* Work from home where possible.

*Call for reinstating priority shopping hours at local shops*
lady shopping for groceries
Last month I wrote to all major and local supermarkets in Nottingham thanking them for their diligent efforts to keep customers safe and asked if they would consider reintroducing priority shopping hours again to keep local people safe.
This is something that benefited key workers, elderly and the clinically vulnerable when the pandemic first hit in spring, and it felt appropriate to try to reinstate it under Tier 3 restrictions and now under national lockdown arrangements.
Age UK Notts are backing this move and Im pleased that Tesco has confirmed it already has priority shopping hours in place at its local Extra and Superstore outlets. A local independent store, Kaya Food Centre on Alfreton Road, has also responded positively to our suggestion, and I hope others will follow suit. We know how valuable these priority shopping hours were to our key workers, vulnerable citizens and shift workers during the first lockdown and appreciate that the new national lockdown will be causing anxiety to people who want to maintain some normality during the next month by visiting the shops and feeling safe. Bonfire Night
National lockdown measures will be in place from tomorrow and so will impact on Bonfire Night. Big celebrations are discouraged the councils usual event at The Forest has sadly had to be cancelled as are private events. If you are planning something to mark the occasion you will of course need to abide by the national lockdown rules. This means:
* You must not meet socially with friends and family indoors in any setting unless you live with them or have formed asupport bubble [ [link removed] ]with them.
* You must not socialise outdoors in private gardens with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble.
* You should only be meeting in public outdoor spaces with the people you live with, your support bubble or one person from another household
* Stay at home, and do not travel unless necessary (food, work, education, medical or exercise reasons)
* Remember: Wash hands, cover face, make space.
You will also need to avoid causing nuisance such as smoke and smells from bonfires as well as taking the usual fire safety precautions and ensuring any fireworks are genuine and are not set off after midnight. This year will be very different but there are ways we can still enjoy and celebrate Bonfire Night with loved ones while also stopping the spread and keeping people safe.
