Friend,
When I first decided to run for Congress, people told me I was crazy. When I decided to run for Congress a second time, people thought I was really crazy. But there was a reason I did it, and I’ve never forgotten that reason:
For far too long, this District has been forgotten. In the six generations my family has lived in this area, I’ve seen the decline in jobs, the weakening economy, the struggling infrastructure, and the nonexistent healthcare system. As a Social Worker, I was ready to take my fight to Congress and to advocate for changes to all of these problems facing our community.
And although we were not victorious today, our fight doesn’t stop here. To the thousands of people who voted for me today, thank you. To our thousands of small-dollar donors who powered this campaign, thank you. To our staff, our volunteers, and our supporters, thank you.
I’m immensely proud of the campaign we built, and for me, victory was always about more than Election Day. It was always about building sustainable organizing infrastructure that lasted past Election Day. It was about holding tough, public conversations with voters all across this District and proving that even when we disagree on almost everything, we can find common ground on something. It was about building a strong campaign in a District that no one else looked at, and refusing to ignore the needs of working people in this District. It was about rejecting national talking points and partisan politics to build a team that focused on your needs, your wants, and your hopes. We did all of that, and for that, I’m proud.
Our team is taking a few days to decide what’s next, but this isn’t the last you’ve heard from any of us!
Thank you, sincerely. I couldn’t be more proud.
