YVETTE HERRELL WINS NEW MEXICO’S 2ND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT SEAT DEFEATING
REP. XOCHITL TORRES SMALL

HERRELL WINS ONE OF THE MOST CLOSELY WATCHED RACES IN THE NATION: RETURNS 2ND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT TO GOP CONTROL

ALBUQUERQUE, NOVEMBER 4 — New Mexicans in the 2nd Congressional District sent a strong message last night, declaring Yvette Herrell the winner with election returns showing she defeated Rep. Torres Small with 54% of the vote to Torres Small’s 46%. Herrell’s victory puts the Congressional seat back in the hands of Republicans. She’ll become a member of the nation’s 117th Congress.

The hotly contested race between Herrell and Torres Small was a rematch of 2018.

Herrell’s victory was a referendum on the incumbent’s liberal voting record in Washington, and voters spoke out for a Representative who promotes a real conservative agenda.

Constituents in the 2nd Congressional District sent a strong message last night: it’s time to return to traditional New Mexico values.  They elected a Congresswoman who stands for family, faith and freedom.

It is the honor of my life to be elected to serve New Mexico’s Second Congressional District,” said Congresswoman-elect Herrell. “My commitment to each citizen of our district is that I will serve each of them with integrity as we work together to rebuild our economy and protect the values that make America great. I thank God, my family, our team, and each and every New Mexican who supported me in this race, and I can't wait to get to work for our incredible district.”

The 2nd Congressional District will again have a Representative will understands the needs of the constituents.

Last night’s returns were a repudiation of Torres Small, whose inconsistent and deceitful voting record in Washington has hurt the District during the past two years. Voters decided they had had enough of the Representative’s radical record, hiding behind her moderate façade.

“This is a great day for Southern New Mexico and the citizens of the District. Herrell will be a true asset for the state in Washington, said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce. “Herrell will ensure that a conservative agenda will be represented, and she stands for New Mexicans and their values. Herrell really understands the pulse of the District and its citizens, and she will push hard to improve the lives of constituents. Herrell will create jobs, protect our oil and gas industry, strengthen our economy, help keep our border secure and stand strong with Republicans on Capitol Hill.”

Pearce was the last Republican to represent the 2nd Congressional District. He served the District for 14 years.

Herrell will be sworn into Congress January 3, 2021.
