The long and turbulent campaign season has ended, and now we wait for the final results. This election is unprecedented in the history of our country. It arrives amidst a global pandemic, the intensifying climate crisis, and a nation coming to terms with longstanding racial and economic injustices.

But through all the uncertainty, we want to thank you and our partners for your continued commitment to fight alongside us for the future of our planet.

We know what’s at stake. Our very ability to protect our environment and climate depends on the health of our democracy and the rule of law. Strong, stable democratic institutions and guaranteed voting rights are essential to protect the planet from climate change.

Without a system of government that lets every voice be heard, there can be no effort to address historic environmental injustices. Our rights — whether the right to go to court or the right to choose our leaders — are the foundations of our struggle for justice. The accuracy and integrity of the election depends on counting every vote. A ballot is a ballot is a ballot, whether it’s mailed in or dropped in a box at a voting booth — each holds the will of a voter.

That’s why Earthjustice is calling for every vote to be counted and the results respected. We fully support legal efforts pushing for a full count of the votes, because our environment, our climate, and our democracy depend on it.

And once a winner is declared, we know our collective fight to defend our planet and communities continues. We know the climate crisis or environmental racism doesn’t end after the election.
