Dear John, We’re not going to sugarcoat it, this has been a long and tiresome election season, and many in our community are just downright exhausted. While we wait for all of the votes to be counted, LGBTQ and allied Virginians have much to be proud of. Despite the unprecedented circumstances of this election, millions of people across the Commonwealth turned out in record numbers to make our voices heard. With Election Day now in the rear view mirror, one thing is for sure - we are all ready to be on the other side of this fight. As we expected, it will take longer to count all of the votes and verify winners in many races here in Virginia and across the country. There are millions of ballots left to be counted, and, because absentee ballots have crucial security measures in place, election officials must take the time to accurately tally votes. We know that this waiting period is exactly what should be happening because a complete and accurate ballot count is more important than a fast ballot count. The truth is, it could be days or weeks before we know who our next president will be, but no matter what happens in this election, Equality Virginia will continue to advocate for the issues that matter the most to you. We won’t stop until all LGBTQ people and families in Virginia feel safe, protected, and celebrated. While we are tired, we are also determined. We will not give up and we will not give in. Our community is resilient and we know how to care for each other. In the coming days, we urge you to take care of yourself and take care of those around you. We have proven that we can pull through in hard times by pulling together. No matter the result, there is a path forward for us. Equality Virginia will still be here with you. We are ready to move forward together to tackle problems, heal divisions, and make Virginia a place where every one of us can thrive. Onward together, All of us at EV | |
