Dear John,We are still wating to hear the final outcome of the US election. As the dust settles, Britain’s position in the world is on the brink. The House of Lords is due to vote on the Internal Market Bill next Monday. This Bill threatens to break not one, but two internationally recognised agreements – the Withdrawal Agreement and the Good Friday Agreement. And the international repercussions will be severe. One of the few things Democrats and Republicans agree on is the significance of the Good Friday Agreement. Last December, Congress, who has the final say on trade deals, voted unanimously to renew their commitment to the Agreement. Nancy Pelosi, who is the leader in Congress, has unequivocally stated that a trade deal with the U.K. would not go ahead if there is a return to a hard border in Ireland, which is what the Internal Market Bill would necessitate. That may mean we end up with no trade deals with any major economies. Add your name to our open letter calling for the House of Lords to stand against the Bill, and vote for any amendments which may limit its damage. We will share our open letter with the relevant peers before Monday’s vote – make sure your name is on there. It’s not just peace in Northern Ireland which is on the line. A favourable trade deal with the USA is at stake. This Bill takes a wrecking ball to our international relationships. Ireland, the EU, the USA and even the devolved nations within the UK, will all be alienated if this Bill passes. Indeed, Best for Britain’s recent polling shows half of Brits think that a no-deal Brexit would negatively affect the UK’s international reputation. Of those, 29% of respondents believed the impact would be ‘very bad’. Join the thousands of people who have already signed our open letter to the House of Lords. Call on them to uphold Britain’s reputation as a trustworthy nation who respects the rule of law. Add your name today. If our Prime Minister can pick and choose which parts of international law they follow, the UK will have no basis for global co-operation and partnership. Passing this Bill will set a troubling precedent our allies won’t soon forget. Best wishes, Naomi Smith,
