John,
We don’t know who won the election yet. But here’s what we do know: Whether Joe Biden is elected as the 46th President of the United States, or if Trump again cobbles together a razor-thin Electoral College margin for a second illegitimate term, we’re going to have work to do.
If Biden wins, we will be mobilizing our allies in Congress to expand Social Security. If Trump wins, we need to fight tooth and nail to save our earned benefits. Either way, we need to make sure our newly elected Social Security champions are ready. Can you chip in $5 as we prepare our New Member orientation and organize for the next Congress?
If Donald Trump is re-elected, he’s promised to terminate Social Security’s funding, which would leave Social Security unable to pay benefits by 2023. This instant crisis would give leverage to the forces who have wanted to cut our earned benefits for years.
But even if Biden wins, Social Security’s enemies will not rest. Republicans, along with their allies on Wall Street and in the corporate media, will point to the debt created by Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires and his failure to contain the coronavirus pandemic. They will demand austerity, including cuts to Social Security—even though Social Security doesn’t add a single penny to the deficit. Their ultimate goal: Jam through the TRUST Act and cut our benefits behind closed doors without accountability.
We need to organize now to oppose the forces of austerity, and demand that Congress expand our earned benefits, not cut them.
Together, this election year, we raised over $120,000 in donations directly to candidates who have promised to be Social Security champions once in office. We’ve got to be sure they’re ready to hit the ground running and fight for us.
Can you chip in $5 to Social Security Works today as we prepare our New Member orientation for the members of Congress who win their races today?
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
