Friend,
Just about everything is different in 2020, and this election will be no exception. Unlike in years past, we may not know who our elected president will be by the end of today.
With the unprecedented number of Americans voting by mail or by ballot dropoff box this year, experts and certified election officials estimate it could take weeks for every ballot to be counted. There are a few different reasons for this:
-
Absentee ballots take longer to count because of security measures to verify the accuracy of those ballots. Some states can’t even start counting absentee ballots until after polls close tonight.
-
Due to the pandemic, election officials are working with reduced staff. We need to be patient so election officials can take the time to make sure every eligible vote is counted accurately.
-
It is also possible that states will need to resolve disputes over ballot counting, including recounts and lawsuits over rejected ballots or counting procedures, extending the time it takes to count ballots and declare the outcome.
Despite COVID, Americans are voting in record numbers. Many chose to cast their ballots via mail or dropbox to stay safe. As expected, it will take longer to count and verify a winner. We can join together to uphold our democracy by ensuring every vote is counted.
Any politician can say whatever they want to, but it’s the will of the voters that decides who leads. Candidates have had their say. Now it’s time for the American people to have ours and for the will of the people to determine the outcome.
Counting every vote means that democracy wins!
In solidarity,
Sydney Roberts
