No matter the outcome of this election, I just want to take a few minutes to say THANK YOU.
The night Navy SEAL SCPO Ryan Owens was killed in Yemen was the night I decided to come home and run for office. To be frank, I had zero expectations of coming this far. I'm still paying off loans. I don't have rich or connected friends. Truthfully, I thought politics was out of reach for a guy like me. But I was inspired to tell Ryan's story, to hold powerful politicians to account, and do my part to restore responsible and ethical leadership here at home. So I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring and give it the "old college try".
But then something amazing happened - YOU! I've met thousands of folks across the district since then, and you have become the driving force behind this campaign. Every day and every interaction is a constant reminder of why I'm in this to win. I think about Tracey's medicine cabinet and what Republican attempts to repeal healthcare would mean for her and her daughter. I remember Anthony's mom who came to me at a house party after she lost her son to the opioid epidemic. I think of Ryan's parents who lost their small business during the COVID shutdown, but still want to keep her ahead in school despite her disabilities.
Each story motivates me. They are the fuel that keep me going. Your donations, volunteer efforts, and simply your kind words have made us competitive - even after the good-ol'-boy networks in Brandon threw a half-million dollars into this race to try and stop us. But this district has made the decision that we won't let corporate interests decide what's best for us anymore. Politicians should answer to everyone, not the select few.
Win or lose, every one of you gives me hope that the ideals of American democracy are not out of reach. You've reminded me that even against the odds, a grassroots campaign of like-minded, hard working, and scrappy Americans can create real change in our community, state, and country. Together, all things are possible.
Now, let's run through the tape and win this thing!
