Saudi Arabia is hosting a women’s golf tournament in November, and the prize money is coming from the Public Investment Fund that Crown Prince MBS controls. We think athletes should put human rights above glory which is why we are collecting petition signatures to four big name competitors asking them to boycott the tournament!

Dear John,

I am personally not a huge fan of golf. There’s a Mark Twain quote that says, “Golf is a good walk spoiled”, and to that I largely agree. The only thing that would make me like golf less is if someone like Crown Prince MBS was hosting a golf tournament or something like that….oh...that’s actually happening?

Saudi Arabia is set to host the Ladies European Tour next month. Yes, ladies! Mohammed bin Salman, the poster child for women’s rights (not), is hosting a tournament with over one hundred women golfers and cash prizes totaling $1.5 million dollars. I don’t think I need to call out the irony of MBS hosting a women’s sporting event, but I will: This is ironic! Not only does Saudi Arabia have a horrible track record regarding women’s rights, but its leadership is actively jailing women’s rights activists and starving Yemen.

We are calling on some high profile golfers who are currently set to compete in the tournament to boycott the event. Surely, the thirty million people in Yemen who are suffering due to MBS’s violence are worth more to these athletes than any amount of money they might win by competing. We are asking Charley Hull, Georgia Hall, Carlota Ciganda, and Anne Van Dam to refuse to compete. Will you sign our petition asking these athletes to stand for what is right?  <[link removed]>

The tournament’s first place prize is one million dollars, and the second is $500,000. Where is the prize money coming from? The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. Who is the chair of the PIF and oversees all of it? Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, you know, the guy that started bombing Yemen over five years ago and continues to strip the women of his country of their most basic rights.

Saudi Arabia’s leadership cares a lot about its image, and this isn’t the first time the crown has used flashy events to distract from its human rights abuses. Whether he is holding sporting events, hosting the G20 summit, or putting on glitzy concerts, MBS is giving the world quite a show but still failing to make genuine improvements. Hosting the Ladies European Tour is just another attempt at sportswashing. Will you ask the competitors to remember Yemen and Saudi women and refuse to attend the tournament?  <[link removed]>

Loujain Alhathloul, a Saudi women’s rights activist, is still sitting in jail as well as numerous other brave Saudi activists. Why is a government that imprisons people for advocating for women’s rights hosting a women’s golf tournament? Make it make sense! And just 500 miles south of where the tournament is taking place, the people of Yemen are suffering at the hands of the man financing the event. Thank you for continuing to take action for Saudi human rights defenders and for the people of Yemen.
