MICHIGAN COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation." MCRGO MONDAY E'NEWS Michigan General Election Notice Michigan will hold its 2020 general election tomorrow. Recognizing that an increasing number of people are voting prior to Election Day by absentee ballot, MCRGO previously publicized the information below in early October. We repeat it here as a reference for people voting in person at their polling place. MCRGO-PAC State Legislative Endorsements Candidates filing for state representative for the August 2020 primary were asked to fill out a short 10 question yes/no survey sent in May to their campaign mailing address on file with the Michigan Secretary of State Bureau of Elections. Candidates were rated based on their responses to this survey. Candidates who fail to submit a survey before the August primary or who scored less than a B rating on their survey are ineligible for endorsement in the general election. Consequently, some state house seats do not have any candidates endorsed by MCRGO-PAC. Ratings and endorsements are made objectively by a balanced multi-partisan PAC committee with no preference shown for political affiliation. MCRGO-PAC endorsements can be found HERE. For U.S. Senate and U.S House races, please consult the NRA-PVF endorsements HERE. You can view your sample ballot (including districts) HERE. Michigan Supreme Court Candidates We are being contacted by MCRGO members and the general public asking which candidates for Michigan Supreme Court are supported by MCRGO-PAC. MCRGO-PAC does not typically endorse beyond state legislative races. Few candidates for state judicial races have enough of a record on firearms issues to justify an endorsement. Unlike legislative candidates, judicial candidates aren't willing to respond to candidate surveys so as to maintain the appearance of being impartial. Supreme Court candidates are nominated by political parties even though those parties do not appear next to their name on the ballot. The nominations this year are: Libertarian: Morgan & Nepton Republican: Kelly & Swartzle Democratic: McCormack & Welch Green: Hubbard For local judicial races, you may wish to do independent research on the candidates appearing on your ballot and consult county political parties for guidance. Victory in the Court of Claims! Last week, the Michigan Court of Claims and Michigan Court of Appeals decided in favor of a request by MCRGO and allied gun groups to block Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson's ban on open carry at polling places. The courts ruled that Benson's directive violated the Administrative Procedures Act and is in conflict with state firearms law. The courts noted that Michigan already has laws prohibiting voter intimidation and firearms brandishing. On Thursday, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel immediately filed an appeal with the Michigan Supreme Court that may be decided later this morning. Benson's directive attempts to solve a problem that doesn't exist by creating law in violation of Michigan's Constitution. It's an attempt to demonize law abiding gun owners who regularly carry outside the home. The full history and documentation of this case can be found HERE.
