Dear John,
This November, National Family Caregivers Month, we come together to honor and celebrate the 16 million caregivers in the United States who selflessly care for those living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.
Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers provide an estimated 18.6 billion hours of care and support a year, valued at $244 billion. In my eyes, the work caregivers do is priceless. Time and time again, I meet caregivers who so selflessly give of themselves and their time to support and care for friends and family living with Alzheimer's.
If you know a caregiver, please pass on my personal appreciation. We know caring for someone living with Alzheimer's can be overwhelming, and we're here to help:
- During the pandemic, we've moved our education programs and support groups online — so caregivers have the ability to connect to a network of support any time they need it.
- Both the caregiver and the person living with Alzheimer's face changes to emotional and physical health as the disease progresses. Some people find a firm understanding of the stages helpful, so we provide disease education and resources at alz.org.
- Being a caregiver doesn't come with an instruction manual, but there are resources to help. We provide free trainings and workshops that help by teaching practical skills.
Caregivers are at the core of our community. For every single one, we press forward guided by our mission to lead the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.
Thank you for honoring caregivers during National Family Caregivers Month,
Donna McCullough
Chief Field and Development Officer
