But as we move on to the next phase of our work, I can't help but reflect on what we've already achieved together.
When I look back on my own career, I'm proud of the work I did at the Justice Department to fight for civil rights and to protect vulnerable communities. But building a grassroots movement of nearly 200,000 volunteers and donors who are ready to combat gerrymandering and voter suppression? I have to admit, that's been a first for me. It's an incredible accomplishment that you and I share.
We don't yet know how this election will turn out -- but we can be certain that we'll be further along in the fight for fair maps than we were in 2011. Our hard work has supported the establishment and protection of redistricting commissions across the country. In 2018 and 2019, the fair map candidates that our affiliate, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, supported were elected to state legislative seats and took control from would-be conservative map manipulators. And our 501(c)(3) affiliate's litigation efforts have been successful around the country and pushed the electoral landscape toward fairness.
Friend, we are prepared for what's ahead. We can't predict when the dust of the 2020 elections will settle. But we know that when it does, all eyes will be on our movement as states across the country redraw their electoral maps. With people like you on our team, I know we'll be ready to hold politicians accountable, demand a transparent process, and achieve fair maps that restore power to the people.
So I'll ask you one more time before all votes are cast: will you donate what you can today, not just to finish these elections strong -- but to prepare for the fight ahead?
