News and Announcements

Events: International Drug Users Rights Day— In 2001 when the need for for a day of global recognition for the rights of drug users was originally articulated by the Drug Policy Foundation group of drug-user activists, November 1st was established. Join us in celebrating the rights of people who use drugs around the world. We have a long way to go, and we both celebrate and honor the work of those harm reductionists that have brought us this far! Check out the work of North Carolina Survivors Union to learn how to get more involved!

Resource: Harm Reduction and the Power of Voting — As Harm Reductionists, we all imagine a world where people who use drugs or trade sex have the ability to do so safely and without fear of judgment or criminal consequences. Voting helps us do just that. This voter guide has the information you need to understand your options and includes a resource guide with links that will prepare you to cast your first vote.
ICYMI: Panel: Making Space for Grief and Loss — This powerful panel of care workers came together to discuss holding space for grief, sustaining our work, and dealing with the realities and frustrations of loss. Watch the recording and follow the dialogue at HRC Lighthouse and RTI International to continue the conversation.

SECTION 2: Emergent and Exciting Work

Training Opportunities: Our new website is full of tools! Our resource center contains categorized resources for harm reduction programs and people who use drugs, our Learning Lab offers on-demand interactive e-learning, and our up-to-date training calendar is full of free webinars to sign up or through the end of the year! If you missed it, check out the recording of this webinar on Stigma, COVID-19, and the impact on Marginalized Communities, featuring panelists Dr. Hillary Kunins, Allan Clear, Monique Tula, and Mark Kinzly, and moderated by Jose Martinez and Hiawatha Collins, from team NHRC!
Research: Responding to HIV Outbreaks Among People Who Inject Drugs — This CDC authored research highlights experiences and lessons learned from eight local HIV clusters and outbreak responses that have occurred across the United States since the 2015 Scott County, Indiana, HIV outbreak and investigation. In response to these outbreaks, health departments identified gaps in delivery of critical harm-reduction services, including access to syringe service programs and sterile injection equipment.
Advocacy: Sign Up to Support Federal Harm Reduction Advocacy — The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for harm reduction services nationwide. Federal funding is urgently needed now to ensure that harm reduction providers can stay open and meet participant needs. Let's all pressure Congress to provide funds to support access to harm reduction.
