Election Day is going to be like nothing we have ever seen before as Donald Trump and the Republican Party are doing everything possible to suppress votes and sow confusion around the potential results.
Our country has seen millions of Americans choosing to vote by mail in hopes of minimizing the spread of COVID-19 that continues to sweep across our nation. With the high volume of mail-in ballots, election officials are working to make sure every vote is counted but it could take days or even weeks to secure a final result. Election night might turn into election month and we cannot let Donald Trump strip away our democratic process by not counting every single vote just because he’s desperate to get re-elected.
If there is pressure to call the presidential race too early (from Republicans or the media), we risk disenfranchising millions of Americans nationwide who voted by mail -- and denying them their right to be heard in our democracy.
Journalists and election officials can’t let Trump and his allies strong arm them into announcing a winner on Election Night based on incomplete or partial results -- at the expense of the integrity of our democracy.
The American people know this election will be the election of our lifetime. We cannot let Donald Trump decide for us.
