Halloween is a scary time, but this year, it's not the ghosts and ghouls giving us frights. It's the fact that, almost eight months into this pandemic, our children still can't safely go door to door greeting neighbors, and most of us won't be trading treats with our friends and colleagues.

I've said this many times over the last few months, but it bears repeating: Electing a Democratic Senate is crucial to getting our country back on track. And while there are exciting opportunities to flip Senate seats in some of our reddest states, we need to commit to protecting our most vulnerable incumbent Democrats.

Mitch McConnell and his Republican loyalists have a seemingly bottomless bag of tricks they've used to undermine our democracy. In his six years as majority leader, McConnell has blocked so many bills that he boasts about his "legislative graveyard" and calls himself "the Grim Reaper."

A Democratic Senate would work with experts to end the COVID-19 pandemic, not openly defy our nation's top scientists.

A Democratic Senate would protect our environment and would never deny that climate change is a real and present danger.

A Democratic Senate would advance civil rights, and women's rights, and LGBTQ+ rights, and would never rush through a Supreme Court nominee that puts these fundamental values at risk.

But to win a majority we need to protect our current seats -- and that means making sure Gary Peters and Doug Jones have the resources they need to win reelection and continue their work on these critical issues.
