So much has happened this year, but our shared sense of urgency and purpose has never wavered. So I wanted to share with you an update on our recent fights and victories — all of them thanks to your perseverance and determination.
When the pandemic hit, Food & Water Action was one of the first organizations to speak out against inhumane water shutoffs. With your support we led the fight to stop water shutoffs in Washington D.C., 16 states, and more than 700 cities and towns across the country — protecting 220 million Americans (67% of the U.S. population).
John, in the past few months we've also seen amazing victories in hard-fought campaigns against dangerous fossil fuel infrastructure in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Many of these local fights began before the pandemic, but COVID-19 could not slow our momentum. And just last week we won two more victories:
Our team in New Jersey led a large coalition pushing NJ Transit to stop a fracked gas power plant in the environmental justice community of Kearny — and we won! The agency will instead proceed with a renewable energy alternative. Learn more about how we stopped the fracked gas power plant!
Your ongoing support has also kept us focused on other critical fights to protect people and our planet. It’s amazing to think about what we’ve accomplished together in just the past year alone. With your support, we:
Mobilized more than 30,000 people to demand Congress oppose Big Oil bailouts;
Demanded that the EPA and USDA step up to enforce basic protections for our food, water and environment;
Fought to enforce basic safety protocols and provide safety equipment for the people who process and inspect our food, in order to protect their health and help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
We couldn’t have done all this without you. You signed petitions, sent emails and texts to your elected representatives, made calls to Congressional leaders, and donated to help fuel these fights. Your support has made a difference, and with you by our side we’ll keep fighting!
As we look toward the future I am more confident than ever that with you by our side we are ready to take on the biggest fights to defend our food, water and climate.
Thank you for all that you do to protect our planet and fight like you live here!
Onward together,
