Dear John – After such a stressful last few months dealing with lockdowns, social distancing, masks and distance learning, I know my kids are looking forward to celebrating Halloween tonight, even if we’ll have to do things a little differently this year to keep everyone safe. As I see scores of kids out with their families tonight, one thing won’t be far from my mind – the 545 children we recently learned were taken from their parents at the U.S. border three years ago. They have not been reunited since. This is an absolute outrage! Congress must investigate and hold accountable everyone who was involved with creating and implementing this horrible policy. Send a message to your members of Congress – hold hearings on the ongoing crisis of family separation at the U.S. border! The family separation policy came to light in 2018. It was met with widespread condemnation as a violation of U.S. and international law, not to mention an abandonment of our national values. Lawsuits soon revealed that an earlier pilot program in 2017 resulted in the deportation of more than 1,000 parents after they were separated from their children[1]. The government made very little effort to keep track of those parents and their children. Now court records indicate that the parents of 545 of these children cannot be found. As a parent, I can hardly begin to imagine the ongoing pain these parents must feel. They have no idea what has become of their children and if they will ever be reunited. We have an obligation to do everything in our power as a nation to find these parents and offer them the opportunity to reunite with their children. Congress has an important role to play in requiring the administration to answer for their actions and do the work required to right this injustice. Tell your members of Congress – we must do everything possible to reunite all children separated at the U.S. border with their parents! Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
