With all of the electoral shenanigans that Donald Trump and his handpicked Supreme Court Justices are engaging in, we need to be prepared for everything.
One of those nightmare scenarios is called a Contingent election―which is what happens when neither candidate receives 270 electoral votes. That could be from a legitimate 269-269 tie, or it could come if Trump successfully denies the seating of a contested state’s electors.
In this case, the U.S. House of Representatives selects the next president. But each Representative doesn’t get one vote. Instead, each state’s congressional delegation votes as a single bloc. So, California’s 53 representatives get one vote, and so does Montana’s single member.
Right now, Republicans control 26 state delegations while Democrats control just 22 (2 others are tied).
