Join the global online gathering to kick off a year of action ahead of the postponed COP26 climate talks

Hi John,
This November is the month when UN climate talks (the 26th ‘Conference of Parties’, or COP26) were due to have taken place in Glasgow. Five years on from the Paris Climate Agreement, we’re still waiting for most countries to make carbon reduction commitments which remotely match up to the ambition needed to curb the worst effects of climate breakdown. Because of Covid-19, the talks have been postponed until November 2021.

Global Justice Now is part of a coalition of campaign groups, trade unions, faith groups, youth and student groups and migrant and racial justice networks, which is mobilising in the UK for climate justice in the run up to and at COP26. The COP26 Coalition ([link removed][UNIQID]) is marking the missing climate talks this year with a global online gathering of workshops and discussion.


** Ground Up: Global Gathering for Climate Justice

Many sessions will have speakers and participants from around the world. The aim is to prepare ourselves for a year of growing mobilisation which can put significant pressure on the UK government and others globally. We want them to commit to real, deep cuts in carbon emissions, within an international framework where those most responsible for the climate crisis contribute most to dealing with it.

There is a huge range of sessions, but Global Justice Now has been particularly involved in organising three of them:


** Trade and the fight for climate justice
------------------------------------------------------------
2.30pm-4pm, Saturday 14 November
A session looking at precisely what it is about our trade regime that is driving us towards climate crisis while funnelling wealth into the hands of a tiny elite.



** What is system change?
------------------------------------------------------------
1.30pm-2.30pm, Sunday 15 November
This workshop will look at why ‘system change’ is necessary to deal with climate change, what we mean by it and what struggles will get us there. With Shalmali Guttal (India), Pablo Solon (Bolivia), Christophe Aguiton (France) and Samantha Hargreaves (South Africa).



** Financing the end of the world
------------------------------------------------------------
2.30pm-4pm, Sunday 15 November
On how governments and multilateral institutions in the global north are financing fossil fuel expansion in the south. Speakers include Lidy Nacpil (Philippines), a representative of Justiça Ambiental (Mozambique) and others. This session is a chance to find out more about our aid and fossil fuels campaign.
