Tiny 1.3% COLA next year
Hello John,

Did you see this time sensitive email from Max? I wanted to make absolutely sure you saw it, because we have an important opportunity to right this wrong. Right now, the National Committee is fighting to ensure that seniors receive an adequate Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) in 2021 — and help ensure beneficiaries can make ends meet during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. So if you haven’t yet signed our urgent Petition to Congress to pass H.R. 8598, please take a moment to do it now.

Please also consider making a donation in whatever amount you can afford to help boost our crucial work on your behalf to strengthen Social Security and protect seniors’ ability to afford their prescription drugs, housing expenses and other basic needs.

Sincerely,
Julie Lynch
Member Services Manager

Dear John,

Next year’s tiny 1.3% Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) is a huge disappointment for the average beneficiary who will see a paltry $20 more in benefits each month. It’s the lowest Social Security COLA retirees have received since 2017. And the timing couldn’t be worse as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to devastate many older Americans both physically and financially.

That’s why I’m asking you to sign our urgent Petition to Congress today, putting pressure on Congress to act without delay to pass U.S. Representative Peter DeFazio’s (OR-04) emergency bill, H.R. 8598, that would give Social Security beneficiaries a 3% COLA in 2021.

This important bill would be a critical first step in fixing the current COLA formula which is woefully inadequate for calculating the true impact of inflation on seniors’ wallets. It especially under-represents the rising costs that retirees pay for expenses like health care, prescription drugs, food and housing.

It’s ironic that as billionaires and big corporations continue to profit from the $1.9 trillion in Trump-GOP tax cuts, America’s seniors are asked to get by with a 1.3% COLA which is barely enough for one prescription co-pay or half a bag of groceries. Meanwhile, health care costs continue to soar and big pharmaceutical corporations are raking in record profits by hiking the price of lifesaving prescription drugs relied on by older Americans.

The health and financial security of millions of Americans depends on getting a fair and accurate COLA next year and every year. Bottom line: We need to tell Congress that seniors deserve an immediate COLA raise and relief on their wallets! So please help us get H.R. 8598 over the legislative finish line by signing our Urgent Petition to Congress today!

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
