As a Muslim immigrant who grew up poor in Missouri, working the night shift to fund my college education, I understand the American dream.
My challenge to Pelosi today reflects a dream the likes of which neither my mother nor I ever imagined. As immigrants, merely being included is often hard enough. For me to challenge the most politically powerful woman on the planet for her seat in Congress is, to put it lightly, punching far above my weight.
On the negative side, this campaign has been targeted by Islamophobic attacks, showing the true color of too many self-described progressives—and media sources, which immediately published uncorroborated political hit pieces on a Muslim immigrant without checking facts or vetting their sources. We must demand better.
The values that we share—Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, worker rights, racial equity, rent and mortgage relief—are no longer fringe ideas, but mainstream policies that meet the needs of our communities, and future generations.
