The record number of absentee and mail-in ballots will complicate tabulating this year’s votes and mean that there is a strong possibility there will not be a clear winner on election night. Predictions could sway wildly, and we all know that Donald Trump will likely use even the slightest pretext to declare victory.
The Republican Party has already announced its intention to challenge the legality of this election at both the national and state levels. Only an unquestionable landslide in every key state will cement a smooth Biden win.

The U.S. third-quarter GDP report came out this week showing eye-catching 33% growth and is already a major Republican talking point. However, all the reputable experts have been quick to caution people taking those numbers without understanding their context.
The second-quarter GDP ended at the depths of the first pandemic shutdowns, so there was little place to go but up. The GDP is still not even close to pre-pandemic levels.
The other key fact about these figures is that the 33% figure represents annualized growth, not just growth during the third quarter. That means the country’s GDP would increase by 33% over the next year if the average rate of growth from this quarter continued for that entire period. And that is next to impossible.
There is another, more important, number: the 228,000–300,000 American deaths already caused by the coronavirus. That number could have been prevented, and doing so would have left our economy in a much better position now.
