With Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation to the Supreme Court behind us, let’s take a moment to reflect on the warning Senator Amy Klobuchar gave us during Justice Barrett’s hearing.
The senior senator from Minnesota pointed out that Barrett is the third justice on SCOTUS who worked for the GOP on Bush v. Gore in 2000 (the other two being Justice Kavanaugh and Chief Justice Roberts). Senator Klobuchar asked Justice Barrett if she thought that was a coincidence. Justice Barrett said the question didn’t make any sense to her.
The question sure makes sense to me, friend. It seems like Senator Klobuchar is calling Trump out for packing the high court with loyalists who will help him steal the election. And it seems like Justice Barrett’s refusal to deny the charge means she understands perfectly well the role she’s been cast to play.
As of writing, FiveThirtyEight gives Joe Biden an 89% chance of winning the presidency. That’s great news. But it won’t mean anything if the MAGA fans in black robes decide mail-in ballots are the new hanging chads.
Here’s what we do to thwart this plan: We win the margin of mail-in ballots AND in-person ballots. We sweep the Senate, House, and the White House. We help Joe Biden win in a landslide -- I mean 400+ electoral votes -- so that even the Supreme Court can’t lawyer Trump out of a humiliating defeat.
We’re on track to win, but we’re not on track to win like that. In fact, we’re currently $5,414 short of today’s fundraising goal.
I’ve seen my fair share of campaigns. I know the exhaustion that sets in during the home stretch. I’m sure you’re sensing it too. If you’re feeling your eyes glaze over as you read, yet again, about how Trump could steal this thing at the last minute, you’re not alone.
But unfortunately, that feeling is exactly what Trump is counting on. And if you’re tired now, just think about how you’ll feel two years into Trump’s second term.
Won’t it be satisfying when Trump looks to his high court on November 4, hoping for a way out from his loss, and all he gets in response are stone faces? Won’t it be great to see that all his scheming, all his “high energy” wheeling and dealing, all his complete and total dishonesty and disrespect for our democracy -- that none of it made a single difference in saving him from the will of the American people?
