Dear Friend,

We, the religiously unaffiliated, matter. In the past ten years, the number of religiously unaffiliated Americans has grown exponentially, and now comprises a quarter of the nation’s population. One party is finally beginning to take note. If the other doesn’t, it could very likely be their death knell.

There is one sure fire way that we can keep that momentum going...VOTE. When we vote as a bloc, our voices are amplified, and it forces those politicians, and their parties who have traditionally ignored us, or even spoken out against us, to “check themselves”, and reconsider the value we bring to the table. While those who identify as “secular” come from across the demographic spectrum, traditionally, secular voters have overwhelmingly voted Democrat. There is no reason to expect any different result in this election, and our bloc may just be what makes the difference in 2020. The GOP should take note, and rethink their strategy of courting only the religious right, because it could very well cost them this year, and in future elections.

As the secular population of the nation grows, it will be up to the parties to change their platforms to one that better fits with secular values and actively pursue the votes of our bloc. The Democratic party is beginning to openly acknowledge our movement, and even granted us a space on the party’s platform this year at the Democratic National Convention. While our position on the platform was relatively muted due to political prudence ahead of the election, this marks a significant step forward for our movement, and places us in a better position the next go round.

I hope that you will do your civic duty and cast your ballot either prior to or on November 3rd. Please be sure to check out these helpful voting resources and guides here on Vote.org. The stakes have never been higher, and your voice should be heard. The more secular votes cast, the greater our influence will be in future elections. You can also visit the Coalition’s Secular America Votes website for Secular Voter specific resources.

Here at the Secular Coalition for America, we are always looking ahead and have a plan ready to go for the 117th Congress in January.

Regardless of election results, there is much work to be
done, and the SCA is prepared for all scenarios.
