On Friday October 23, 2020 Border Patrol shot and killed a man outside the Las Americas Outlets in San Ysidro, California. Our community calls for an independent investigation with no interference or involvement from Border Patrol, CBP or any other DHS agency.

** Water Drop

Things we found this past weekend:
- Spanish prayer card
- Camouflage backpack filled with snacks and some personal items.
- Consumed gallons of water that we have left behind on a previous Water Drop, along with used socks that were changed out with the new socks we left in our supply packs.
- Cave filled with candles.
All of these items give us a glimpse of what happens in the desert while we are not out there, and reminds us why we need to be out there.
Weekly desert trips during Covid with small groups of the most experienced Water Drop members has allowed us to learn so much, act rapidly and advance our mission. Thank you to everyone who has continued to show up on a regular basis.

** Familias Reunidas

We were able to free one more person from detention through our Familias Reunidas Meet Adom, a 26 year old Ghanaian asylum seeker who has been in Imperial Valley Regional Detention Center for 2 1/2 months. We are so glad he will now be able to start his new life in New Jersey and no longer be in a detention center with confirmed COVID cases.
According to government data, there were over 48,000 migrants in detention during 2019’s fiscal year, across 200 immigration prisons. California has some of the highest rates of migrants in detention.
We need your help to get more migrants like Adom out of immigration prisons. The support and donations we have received in the last few months have helped over 50 migrants. But we are running low are tapping in to the last of our funds and we need your support to continue helping mothers, fathers, and loved ones who are still detained. A Very Special Shelter Aid Update:👶🏻
Remember our friend and Pro Amore Dei shelter director Ms.Leticia? She shared with us some exciting news: two baby girls were just born to two of our migrant friends! She shared these sweet photos of the two healthy newborn babies. We hope these two baby girls grow up in a world where them and their parents are welcomed and not singled out by unjust laws and policies as they are now. We see them and are also reminded just how much work we have left to go, and how we must continue to fight for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. We hope to use our voices and platform to remind you that you have a voice and platform too, and you can help us create a humane and just system!
We are feeling especially restless not being able to see these cuties in person, but take comfort knowing all of your donations are making their way to shelters like this one to make sure they can purchase everything they need. We will all see each other soon.

BuzzFeed News has obtained thousands of pages of documents from internal investigations of deaths of immigrants held in ICE custody.

"... In June 2019, BuzzFeed News filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking the release of emails, investigative reports, medical records, and other documents related to 25 deaths in custody that ICE had publicly disclosed since President Donald Trump took office.
When the agency did not promptly provide records, BuzzFeed News filed a successful lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security, ICE’s parent agency. To date, DHS has produced more than 5,000 pages of documents related to deaths in ICE custody. Collectively, they tell the story of how ICE has in some instances failed to provide adequate care to detainees, some of whom are locked up for months or years before their immigration cases are resolved.

Police say man killed in Border Patrol shooting near San Ysidro was crossing into US illegally
Paramedics pronounced the man dead less than an hour after the shooting on Friday. According to border patrol officials, the man was illegally entering the US.

"SAN DIEGO — San Diego police homicide detectives Saturday were investigating the deadly shooting of a non-U.S. citizen by a US. Border Patrol agent on federal property near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro.
The shooting occurred close to the international border near the Las Americas Premium Outlets mall on Camino De La Plaza at 5:45 p.m. Friday, according to Aaron Heitke, chief patrol agent, United States Border Patrol, San Diego Sector.
He provided an update on Saturday saying that the incident began when a border patrol agent responded to apprehend a man illegally entering the United States west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
"During the arrest, an altercation ensued and the agent discharged his firearm wounding the man who was later identified as an adult Mexican national," Heitke said.
He said nearby agents and law enforcement responded and began lifesaving efforts until emergency services arrived.
Paramedics pronounced the suspect dead at 6:25 p.m., Heitke said.
The San Diego Police Department is leading the investigation, according to Heitke. He said future updates on the incident would come from SDPD. "

the Adelanto ICE Processing Center to reduce the detainee population by 50 people per day, starting October 15, until the number of people detained in the facility dropped from 772 to 475.

ICE’s COVID-19 Death Toll Might Be Higher Than It Claims

As of October 22, ICE confirmed a total of 6,743 ** cases of COVID-19 ([link removed][UNIQID])
diagnosed across 99 facilities since the pandemic began in March. 661 people who have active cases remain in ICE custody across 57 detention centers, with people either being monitored or placed in isolation.
There are an additional 45 confirmed cases among ICE staff members, though the agency hasn’t provided updated numbers on staff since June. The agency also does not report cases or deaths among ICE contractors, who run most ICE detention centers.

Things we found this past weekend:
- Spanish prayer card
- Camouflage backpack filled with snacks and some personal items.
- Consumed gallons of water that we have left behind on a previous Water Drop, along with used socks that were changed out with the new socks we left in our supply packs.
- Cave filled with candles.
All of these items give us a glimpse of what happens in the desert while we are not out there, and reminds us why we need to be out there.
Weekly desert trips during Covid with small groups of the most experienced Water Drop members has allowed us to learn so much, act rapidly and advance our mission. Thank you to everyone who has continued to show up on a regular basis.

We were able to free one more person from detention through our Familias Reunidas Meet Adom, a 26 year old Ghanaian asylum seeker who has been in Imperial Valley Regional Detention Center for 2 1/2 months. We are so glad he will now be able to start his new life in New Jersey and no longer be in a detention center with confirmed COVID cases.
According to government data, there were over 48,000 migrants in detention during 2019’s fiscal year, across 200 immigration prisons. California has some of the highest rates of migrants in detention.

BuzzFeed News has obtained thousands of pages of documents from internal investigations of deaths of immigrants held in ICE custody.

"... In June 2019, BuzzFeed News filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking the release of emails, investigative reports, medical records, and other documents related to 25 deaths in custody that ICE had publicly disclosed since President Donald Trump took office.
When the agency did not promptly provide records, BuzzFeed News filed a successful lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security, ICE’s parent agency. To date, DHS has produced more than 5,000 pages of documents related to deaths in ICE custody. Collectively, they tell the story of how ICE has in some instances failed to provide adequate care to detainees, some of whom are locked up for months or years before their immigration cases are resolved.
The agency is expected to hand over more records in the future; BuzzFeed News today is releasing all of the case files that have been turned over. Although there have been ** news reports ([link removed][UNIQID])

Police say man killed in Border Patrol shooting near San Ysidro was crossing into US illegally
Paramedics pronounced the man dead less than an hour after the shooting on Friday. According to border patrol officials, the man was illegally entering the US.

"SAN DIEGO — San Diego police homicide detectives Saturday were investigating the deadly shooting of a non-U.S. citizen by a US. Border Patrol agent on federal property near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro.
The shooting occurred close to the international border near the Las Americas Premium Outlets mall on Camino De La Plaza at 5:45 p.m. Friday, according to Aaron Heitke, chief patrol agent, United States Border Patrol, San Diego Sector.
He provided an update on Saturday saying that the incident began when a border patrol agent responded to apprehend a man illegally entering the United States west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
"During the arrest, an altercation ensued and the agent discharged his firearm wounding the man who was later identified as an adult Mexican national," Heitke said.
He said nearby agents and law enforcement responded and began lifesaving efforts until emergency services arrived.
Paramedics pronounced the suspect dead at 6:25 p.m., Heitke said.
The San Diego Police Department is leading the investigation, according to Heitke. He said future updates on the incident would come from SDPD. "

the Adelanto ICE Processing Center to reduce the detainee population by 50 people per day, starting October 15, until the number of people detained in the facility dropped from 772 to 475.

ICE’s COVID-19 Death Toll Might Be Higher Than It Claims

"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues to mismanage the spread of the coronavirus in its facilities nationwide—and the consequences might be far more deadly than the agency wants to admit.
As of October 22, ICE confirmed a total of 6,743 ** cases of COVID-19 ([link removed][UNIQID])
diagnosed across 99 facilities since the pandemic began in March. 661 people who have active cases remain in ICE custody across 57 detention centers, with people either being monitored or placed in isolation.
There are an additional 45 confirmed cases among ICE staff members, though the agency hasn’t provided updated numbers on staff since June. The agency also does not report cases or deaths among ICE contractors, who run most ICE detention centers.
