1. This Week in Elections
 (Only 4 days to go!)

Polling conducted by 538.org

  • With fewer than 100 hours till Election Day, the Trump and Biden campaigns are sweeping across the swing states likely to decide the election's outcome: Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona. Simultaneously, Democratic vice-presidential nominee, Senator Kamala Harris is looking to shore up support in Texas, while Vice President Pence has hit the campaign trail in Arizona. However, a major uptick in coronavirus infections in several battleground states is creating uncertainty over how or if people will vote. [1] Help support toss-up Senate races here >

  • Concerns are mounting over voter confusion, public confidence in officials, and election administration issues after a federal appeals court in Minnesota ruled that any ballots received after 8pm on election night would not be counted. And with just four days till the election, an estimated 578,000 absentee ballots in the state have yet to be returned. Officials are urging voters who have not yet mailed their ballots to return them by dropbox or vote in person. [2]

  • Americans are gearing up for possible post-election violence during a high-stakes presidential election where the winner may not be determined for days--or even weeks. And across the country, businesses are boarding up windows and installing temporary barriers in preparation. Concerns are also growing over the possibility that Trump-aligned right-wing extremists--such as those accused of targeting the governors of Michigan and Virginia--will take to the streets should the election face delays or results in a Joe Biden victory.  3. Election Analysis

What the US election means for Iranian Americans
Sina Toossi, Senior Research Analyst for Al Jazeera

For Iranian Americans, the election of Donald Trump was more than an expression of intolerance and ignorance in the United States. It was an assault on their basic civil rights and the existence of their country of heritage.

In the past four years, Iranian Americans have been torn from their families, stripped of their bank accounts, and arrested at the border. A continuation of the status quo would make the community an ever-more vulnerable minority, especially as the drums of war against Iran beat louder.

The plight of Iranian Americans is proof of not only the inherent dangers of a xenophobic commander-in-chief, but of the corrosive effect warmongering policies abroad have on civil liberties at home. Many of the challenges faced by the community today are a direct consequence of tensions between the US and Iranian governments, such as the “Muslim ban” that mostly targets Iranians and is grounded in debunked security excuses, or broadly-written sanctions that have led to cases of banking and other services being denied to Iranian Americans.

The fact that Americans of Iranian heritage are now facing blatant discrimination should worry all Americans concerned with safeguarding the US as a constitutional republic. This moment calls for broad coalition building and bold political action among Americans from all ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
