Where is the Brexit Transparency?

The last two weeks have been a rollercoaster ride for Brexit. On Friday, October 16^th the Prime Minister finally seemed to stick to his word by proclaimed the United Kingdom would walk away from the European Union negotiations on World Trade Organisation terms if the EU did not come forward with radically different proposals. However, just a few days later, on Wednesday October 21^st, we were told intense trade talks were back on track with the EU’s Chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, arriving in London the following next day!

In order to get to this point, the UK had reasonably demanded the EU match two criteria - a willingness to actually negotiate intensely (something we at Get Britain Out have been calling for since negotiations began) and a public acceptance by the EU of a need to compromise on its demands. In what seemed like a momentary lapse of common sense, the EU actually accepted these demands. However, this was by no means unanimous - with French President Emmanuel Macron, as usual, still refusing to accept he needs to compromise, particularly on the issue of fishing. So, whether this is all talk and no action by our Prime Minister, still remains to be seen.

While Macron refuses to budge, in the actual talks it seems Barnier seems to be keeping to his promises to compromise on some of the issues, with the EU and the UK now both proposing legal texts in many of the less contentious areas including policing cooperation and aviation. Such texts are the final steps towards an agreement.

What’s more it seems there has been some softening of demands from the EU on control over UK State Aid. However, without the full removal of this demand, any trade deal should not be on the table. Lord Frost has made it clear in earlier discussions, he would not approve any foreign control over our economy. Now his words must match his actions. One thing is clear however, if progress is being made in these areas, this Government needs to be much more open and transparent with the Great British Public. If we and the businesses in this country which drive our economy do not know what is going on, then there is no ability to prepare for the end of the year.

I have heard talks are going well from via EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Council, Charles Michel - so why have we not had any information from those on the UK side. Why all the secrecy? Mr Michel has also confirmed the EU wants to begin the process of ratifying an agreement by mid-November. Such a close deadline suggests a final deal is near - as it’s not long until New Year’s Eve - yet our own Government officials are telling us nothing!

The pessimist in me wonders just how serious the Prime Minister’s threat to walk away was a fortnight ago. The whole threat - and the EU’s response - seemed extremely staged-managed, with little shock displayed from either side. Was this all a pre-Christmas pantomime to help Boris Johnson sell a compromise deal to the voters which he has already approved? This all seems to me to be too reminiscent of what happened with Theresa May! I hope I am wrong, but be assured, we at Get Britain Out will give any deal which emerges from these talks a thorough inspection.
Before I continue - If Get Britain Out is able to continue putting up our fight – especially now we’re on the final stretch, we really need more donations to keep us going.

We are very appreciative of the donations we have received so far, but even at this vital final stage, donations are reducing. The only way we can keep the pressure on the Government is if we have funding to pay the bills, pay my 2 staff – and keep ourselves afloat. We are so close now and the next few months will either make or break Brexit. We need a REAL BREXIT instead of a Brexit In Name Only (BRINO) – and a GOOD Trade Deal OR WE MUST COME OUT of the Transition Period on ‘No Deal’ WTO Terms!

I understand not everyone can donate, but if we fail to keep up the pressure on the Government, we may find ourselves with a Brexit In Name Only!

One thing which must still be considered by this Government however, is the ability to walk away - not just from the trade talks, but also the Withdrawal Agreement as a whole. As we have been saying for over a year now, with the Withdrawal Agreement in place, the UK will not be truly free from the EU, regardless of any trade deal agreed. What’s more, the Prime Minister’s love affair with proclaiming he is seeking either a ‘Canada-style’ or ‘Australia-style’ deal must come to an end. The reason for this is both scenarios are simply impossible while the Withdrawal Agreement is in place. It is time the Prime Minister stopped trying to hide behind slogans and word-play. Boris, you must be honest – and transparent - with the Great British Public!

With trade talks with the EU now intensifying, it may be easy to take our focus off all the other current ongoing trade discussions. There was good news last week with the new UK-Japan Free Trade Agreement officially signed. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has welcomed this Agreement and gone as far as saying a UK-Canada deal is progressing well and should be “far easier than UK-EU negotiations”! In addition, excellent progress is currently being made in talks with Australia, New Zealand and the USA, where in all, 3 sets of negotiations legal texts have begun circulating. What has taken almost 4 years with the EU so far, has happened in a matter of months when dealing with sensible and pragmatic partners. Kenya has also come out stating they are pursuing an independent trade deal with the UK, in spite of opposition from some fellow African nations.

The UK clearly does not have a damaged global reputation as some Remainers would have you believe!

While we have our own struggles with the EU, it is worth remembering the USA goes to the polls next Tuesday (November 3^rd) to elect a new President. While President Trump has consistently advocated for a top rate relationship with the UK, his opponent, Joe Biden, has said he would always prioritise the European Union - along with a very pro-China perspective - which is at odds with the UK’s foreign policy stance. His Vice-Presidential running mate, Kamala Harris isn’t much better, with shared views on China and an extremely pro-establishment mentality. It is also worth noting - if something happens to Joe Biden if he becomes President, Harris could end up being President for a massive 10 years if she won re-election in 4 years’ time. Certainly, a worrying thought!

Finally, just today the EU has made clear its intention to take legal proceedings against the UK over plant health quality standards. The thing is, the EU is complaining our standards are too high! This is exactly why the Government should not abide by a 'Level Playing Field' with Brussels. The UK has undeniably higher standards right across the board!
