This is part four of our series “What could have been: Covid-19” to
discuss how our response to Covid-19 would have differed under Medicare
for All.

Insurance company profits have skyrocketed during the Covid-19
pandemic.

While people have been hit with surprise medical bills, struggled to pay
their rent, and lost their jobs along with their health insurance, some
insurance companies are reporting that their profits have doubled since
the start of the pandemic.

But this isn’t a surprise, and here’s their secret: monthly premiums.

While we pay monthly premiums, health care insurers keep their costs low
by denying care using three main tactics:

* Deciding the care is “not medically necessary”
* Excluding doctors or hospitals as “out of network”
* Refusing to cover care they deem “experimental”

Our entire health care system is designed to keep private insurers rich
because the care you get is not decided by you and your doctor, but rather
by what insurance companies are willing to pay for.

Many insurance companies are now refusing to cover all Covid-19 treatment,
including long-term health impacts, which is causing patient costs to
skyrocket.

Many of our opponents claim that Medicare for All will require providers
to ration resources. But the truth is that private insurance denying care
is what rationing looks like under a for-profit health care system. It
allows for insurance companies to make the rules based off of what will
give them the highest profit.

It’s misinformation like this that is one of our biggest challenges, but
we have the solution: our Medicare for All 101 training. This is where
people can learn the ins and outs of Medicare for All, including what our
opponents are saying to make people fearful of what will be a more fair,
more complete health care system.

The Covid-19 pandemic has shown us how broken our health care system
really is, and it’s why we need your help to win now more than ever.
Medicare for All would mean that no one would have to pay for Covid-19
treatment or ever be denied care because of their insurance company.

Just by reading this far, we know you are educated on Medicare for All,
but to help us grow this movement even more, [ mailto:?subject=Upcoming%20webinar&body=Hey%20friends,%20%0A%0AAs%20you%20may%20know,%20I%E2%80%99m%20a%20supporter%20of%20Medicare%20for%20All,%20and%20I%20wanted%20to%20invite%20you%20to%20join%20an%20upcoming%20webinar%20this%20month%20to%20learn%20more%20about%20the%20basics%20of%20it%20and%20get%20your%20questions%20answered.%20%C2%A0%0A%0AHealth%20care%20is%20very%20confusing%20as%20it%20is,%20and%20I%20know%20a%20lot%20of%20people%20have%20heard%20of%20Medicare%20for%20All%20or%20single-payer,%20but%20may%20not%20know%20what%20it%20is%20or%20how%20it%20works.%0A%0AThis%20Medicare%20for%20All%20101%20webinar%20is%20geared%20toward%20beginners%20to%20learn%20more%20about%20our%20current%20system%20and%20answer%20their%20questions%20about%20reform.%0A%0AThere%20are%202%20different%20dates%20and%20times%20to%20choose%20from,%20and%20you%20can%20RSVP%20here%3A%20https%3A//act.medicare4all.org/signup/mfa-101-webinars/?source=friend%0A%0AI%20hope%20you%20can%20make%20it%20and%20look%20forward%20to%20hearing%20about%20what%20you%20learn. ]please click here to
