I’m proud to endorse Mondaire Jones and Marie Newman, two progressives running for Congress.

If elected, Mondaire Jones from New York’s 17th congressional district would become the first openly gay Black person to serve in the U.S. Congress.

Marie Newman defeated an anti-choice incumbent Democrat in her March primary in Illinois’s 3rd congressional district. Now she’s looking to keep her historically Democratic district blue, running on an unabashed progressive agenda.

Mondaire and Marie both join me in fighting for progressive policies including a Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and universal childcare. Like me, neither takes money from corporate PACs, so they’re counting on grassroots support.

An attorney, nonprofit leader, and activist, Mondaire was raised by a single mother who worked multiple jobs, and by his grandparents who worked as a janitor and a house-cleaner. He saw firsthand how our economy doesn’t work for everyday people, and how critical government assistance can be to fill in the gaps.

Marie decided to run because her longtime representative was out of step with her district’s values. The conservative “Democrat” incumbent Dan Lipinski vocally opposed abortion access and marriage equality, and he voted against the Affordable Care Act. If elected, Marie will proudly fight for justice and equity.

Neither Marie nor Mondaire have served in elected office before, but they’ve seen firsthand how members of Congress can fail to represent or fight for their communities. So they’re running to be new kinds of leaders, engaging with people who’ve been shut out of the political process for too long. Let’s help them win!
