U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been increasing its enforcement and messaging against “sanctuary” jurisdictions. Let’s set the record straight on “sanctuary” policies.

John,

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been increasing its enforcement and messaging against “sanctuary” jurisdictions. Let’s set the record straight on “sanctuary” policies with these facts:

  • Sanctuary policies comply with federal law.
  • Jurisdictions that adopt sanctuary policies or do not honor ICE detainers have proven to be safer and more economically vibrant than those that do.
  • Immigrants are not shielded from deportation in sanctuary jurisdictions. These jurisdictions still may share information or otherwise cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
  • Federal actions intended to force local jurisdictions to perform immigration enforcement are likely unconstitutional.

Sanctuary policies are adopted by communities to strengthen their neighborhoods so that all members can contribute without fear. And the facts show these policies improve public safety.

Truth matters in a vibrant democracy. Fact sheets by the American Immigration Council combat misinformation that overshadows the immigration debate.
