This week, InSight Crime delves deep into government claims of success against organized crime: that Nicaragua been spared as a transit hub for cocaine, that gun seizures in El Salvador are disarming the country’s murderous street gangs, and that the killing of an ELN commander has weakened the Colombian rebel group. So let's get started.

** Latin America’s History of Dirty Cops, Ministers and Generals ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------

There is one element that has proven vital to the operational success of international drug trafficking organizations the world over, including Latin America: collusion from corrupt government officials to safeguard shipments and avoid interdiction.

Over the years, a number of high-profile cases have illustrated the extent to which security officials have fallen on the wrong side of the law and involved themselves with organized crime groups.

** 10th Anniversary
------------------------------------------------------------

On November 18, we will take a sometimes light, sometimes heavy, all the time crime-nerdy look back on ten years of InSight Crime. There is no way to sum up ten years of the sweat and tears that went into the creation of this hybrid organization, but to help us try, we will bring in a couple of heavy-hitters from the outside: Juanita León ([link removed]) , the founder and director of La Silla Vacía ([link removed]) , who will be interviewing our founders and co-directors, Jeremy McDermott and Steven Dudley, about their beginnings and beyond; and Robert Muggah ([link removed]) , the co-founder and research and innovation director of the Igarapé Institute ([link removed]) , who will be quizzing the directors about the most important work InSight Crime has done in the decade past.

As part of this celebration, we would like to hear how InSight Crime has been useful to you, what stories or coverage you have particularly enjoyed, and what you would like to see more of, all of which we will include in the conference. Please send your comments to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) . Many thanks.

** Wanted: Spring Interns
------------------------------------------------------------

Since our inception, interns have played a fundamental role in our work, from researching criminal organizations to copyediting investigations to helping us develop our website. Many have also become key staffers, while others have become our ambassadors in NGOs, government agencies and multilaterals around the Americas and beyond. Now, InSight Crime is opening another round to select some of the best and brightest for our Spring internship. It’s a competitive process in part because our interns do meaningful work with us from the moment they step into our proverbial doorway.
