Big pharma is having its cake and eating it during this pandemic. For years, vaccine development to tackle deadly viruses has been dropped because of the lack of financial return. Preventing diseases just isn’t profitable.

Now during this global pandemic, billions of pounds in public money has been poured into the research and development of a safe and effective Covid-19 vaccine. And big pharma is hoping to cash in.

Public research relies on pharmaceutical companies to develop, manufacture and distribute the final vaccine product. But with no conditions on public funding, big pharma can patent the vaccine and withhold vital information on how to make it. This leaves the door open for price gouging and profiteering.

It also means no one else can make the successful vaccine, so there won’t be enough to go round and rich countries get to buy up scarce supplies leaving the global south without.

A publicly funded Covid-19 vaccine should benefit public health and benefit people everywhere. There should be no monopolies and effective vaccines should be shared with the world – so that we can end this global pandemic together.
