East of England: Drugs, counterfeit tobacco and cigarettes seized by police

A policing team that targets serious and organised criminal activity has made more than 20 arrests in the past month, it has reported.

Operation Sentinel was launched in the south Suffolk area in May last year, with dedicated teams launching in the west and the east of the county last October. Over the past year it has provided enhanced coverage of the road network including seizing over £21,000 of illicit tobacco and cigarettes alongside £55,000 of illegal drugs.

US: Juul cuts valuation to $10 billion

Juul Labs has dropped its valuation to about $10 billion, down from $38 billion two years ago when tobacco giant Altria Group took a 35% stake in the company, according to a company memo seen by Reuters on Thursday, 29 October.

The company’s new valuation was influenced by recent decisions to exit certain markets and related restructuring costs, according to the memo sent to Juul employees by chief executive officer Kevin Crosthwaite.

Over the past two years, the e-cigarette company has been hit by stricter regulation, lawsuits and investigations into whether it marketed its products to teens. Its sales and market share have tumbled.  In September 2020, the company said it would make a significant cut to its global workforce and explore pulling out of some European and Asia-Pacific markets to save cash.

House of Lords Debate: United Kingdom Internal Market Bill

During a House of Lords debate on Wednesday 28 October 2020 Lord Young Of Cookham, Baroness Finlay, and Lord Anderson argued that the lack of sufficient exception for public health would make it difficult for any part of the UK to implement policies necessary to protect the health of their populations. They tabled amendments to the Internal Market Bill, necessary to protect public health objectives throughout the UK.
