Hi John,

In these last, heady days before an election, it's easy to get caught up in the polls and the vote counts and the punditry. But I think it's important to remember just what we're fighting for.

I'm in this for my two daughters, who were angry and afraid after the election in 2016. They couldn't believe that a man who openly admitted to assaulting women, who mocked people with disabilities, whose racism was blatantly on display, could be elected to the highest office in the land. They wanted to fight back and make this country safe and welcoming for everyone -- and I couldn't let them do it alone.

I'm in it for my mom, who raised me and my brothers as a single parent, made it through community college (the same one I later attended), and spent decades working as a nurse, but couldn't afford the insulin she needed to stay healthy -- to stay alive. I will always fight for affordable, accessible health care in her honor.

And I'm in it for you and your kids. Because the world's most powerful nation should have the world's best public schools. Because our economy should work to benefit the middle class -- not Wall Street. Because women's rights are human rights, because Black lives matter, and because this planet is the only one we've got.
