ADL wrote to Nancy Pelosi and Kevin McCarthy, the House Speaker and the House Minority Leader, to praise the bipartisan recognition and repudiation of the threat that the QAnon movement poses to democratic institutions and our shared effort to ensure progress towards justice and fair treatment for all. The House overwhelmingly and bipartisanly passed H. Res. 1154 this month to do just that. We have also called on these leaders to deny any QAnon adherents in the House from their Party caucus and conference and from any committee assignments.
But what is QAnon, and why is it a growing concern for all of us?
ADL has the answers and we encourage you to read our ‘At the Extremes’ briefing about the threat of QAnon and its paranoid adherents. Here’s an excerpt:
What/Who: QAnon is a sprawling, convoluted conspiracy theory that has made dangerous inroads into American life and politics. We’ve deciphered the coded language favored by its adherents.
Why it Matters: The FBI and the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point have deemed QAnon a threat, social media companies are banning Q-related accounts, and an overwhelming, bipartisan majority in the U.S. House of Representatives has

condemned QAnon, rejected its theories and cited them as motivating violence, harassment and criminal activity. Still, the paranoid theory persists — online and on the campaign trail.
In May, 2020, the Federal Bureau of Investigation

concluded that QAnon and other “political conspiracy theories very likely will [foster] increasing political tensions and ... criminal or violent acts.” The FBI classified QAnon as a “fringe political” theory, but that hasn’t kept its far-reaching, chaotic lies from infiltrating the American political system.

- Disinformation: Claims of a Democratic Coup or Attempt to “Steal” the Election
- Disinformation: Threatening emails “from the Proud Boys” targeted Democratic voters in four states
