My name is Gustavo Gatica, and I’m from Chile. I’m a university student who,
like many others, joined protests that broke out across the country over
inflation and inequality.

One night in November last year during the protests, the police loaded their
shotguns with rubber and metal ammunition and those in charge did nothing to
stop them. Hundreds had already been hurt and dozens had suffered eye injuries,
but that didn’t prevent them from continuing to fire into the crowds.

I was shot in both eyes and permanently blinded.

Despite the media attention on my case around the world, the commanders in
charge haven’t been held to account and the police haven’t made the changes
needed so this doesn’t happen again.
