This week, we remember the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Eighteen years ago, our nation changed forever following an act of cowardice from the enemies of freedom. The events of September 11 have left an indelible mark on American and world history, and certainly on the lives of the victims. In July, the Senate Finance Committee passed my bill, the Prescription Drug Pricing Reduction Act. That landmark legislation would save taxpayers more than $100 billion and save seniors more than $30 billion in out-of-pocket costs for their prescriptions. I recently sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo regarding an Inspector General assessment that the department is failing to adequately protect U.S. explosive detection canines working abroad to assist in the fight against terrorism. The report raises concerns that the State Department has not adequately ensured that dogs placed into service in foreign countries receive proper nutrition, living conditions or veterinary care. It's important for Congress to know whether this program is operating effectively and efficiently and whether animals involved in the program are being treated according to the humane and ethical standards that the American people undoubtedly expect.
