Fighting about local Mass. geography is a time-honored tradition

Recently, I found myself in the midst of a controversy when I used a loaded word in a story. That word was “Berkshires.” Several readers informed me that you aren’t supposed to use the term “Berkshires” until you’ve crossed into Berkshire County.
Local geography is defended vigilantly in Massachusetts, and living in the Berkshires is just about the only interesting thing these people have going for them, once they realize that no one cares that they used to live in New York.
