Dear John,

We all live by certain values. The things that matter to us shape our day to day, but more than that, they shape the way we contribute to the world. They shape the way we interact with those around us, in our homes and in our communities. As Election Day approaches, we’ve heard a lot of talk about what the future might hold. This has been a difficult year for many of us. And November 3rd is our chance to speak out on the values that matter most.

This election is bigger than any candidate. It’s bigger than any of us as individuals. There’s more on the line this time. We’re battling not one, but two, deadly pandemics: COVID-19 has wreaked havoc across the country and the world, impacting some of our most vulnerable in ways that would have been unimaginable a year ago. As LEAP was in the midst of our response to the virus, connecting with state officials and law enforcement on the front lines to advocate for practical ways to minimize the damage in our jails and our communities at large, another long-simmering public health crisis reached its boiling point.

Police violence in America has dominated the news cycle since George Floyd’s murder, but let’s be clear: it was a crisis long before Mr. Floyd’s death made headlines. The Law Enforcement Action Partnership is uniquely equipped to act on the need for a new way forward in policing.

Our speakers and staff have never been busier. We’re doing everything we can to help build a justice system that is truly just. The police, judges, prosecutors, and corrections officials who join LEAP live by the values of integrity and accountability. We know that transparency is not only important, but necessary. We believe police are a part of the communities we serve, and we want those communities to be safe and healthy.

LEAP speakers and staff fall across the spectrum of political beliefs. We are a nonpartisan organization in the truest sense. But we’re working toward our common goals of community trust and wellbeing, of a justice system that truly serves the people. Whatever your values or political beliefs may be, now is the time for action. Vote your conscience. Vote for a path forward for our communities. Vote for a better way to police. Vote on critical issues like bail reform, drug decriminalization and treatment access, access to psilocybin therapy, sentencing reform, marijuana legalization and regulation, and the restoration of voting rights. Please vote.* Our lives depend on it.

In solidarity,

Major Neill Franklin (Ret.)
Executive Director

*Be sure your vote is counted. Vote early, and if you are voting by absentee ballot, drop your ballot off in person if you can.
