Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has kept the Assembly adjourned for well over five months. He and his Republican colleagues have done nothing as the coronavirus pandemic has spread throughout our state. Now he's getting panicked because his OWR-endorsed opponent is breathing down his neck.
Vos thought his gerrymandered district made him safe and he would be re-elected for as long as he wanted to hold the office. Now he's longer sure and suddenly he's "open" to doing something about the surge in COVID cases in Wisconsin.
When we endorsed Joel Jacobsen and threw our full support behind his effort to unseat Robin Vos, party operatives and establishment types said we were wasting our time. They said the way the district boundaries were drawn in 2011 by Vos himself and his Republican allies in the legislature made it impossible to seriously challenge his re-election. They said the same thing about nearly every candidate we endorsed. Now, in the final days before voting ends on November 3, the party establishment is singing a different tune. They now realize races they deemed unwinnable can be won after all.
We endorsed Joel Jacobsen because he is an unapologetic progressive and he deserved our support. When we did it, we were virtually alone in thinking he stood a chance against Robin Vos. Now it's clear to everyone, including Vos himself, that this seat is very much up for grabs.
Voting ends in a matter of days. Let's make the most of every one of them and keep the pedal to the metal.
