Dear
John,
Please join the Russell Kirk Center for a three-week virtual discussion of the cultural, intellectual, and political role played by coffeehouse life in 18^th century London. This theme has been inspired by Leo Damrosch’s The Club: Johnson, Boswell, and the Friends Who Shaped an Age ([link removed]) .
We will consider how one club in particular inspired Edmund Burke and Samuel Johnson and invented modern acting, contemporary economics, literary and dramatic criticism, political debate, classical painting, the first great biography, and so much more! As Josef Pieper once said, leisure is the basis of culture. The coffeehouse has made something of a comeback in our time. Join us for this free webinar and enjoy learning more about the cultural significance of the world’s first leisurely coffee society.

The Club discussion will meet November 10, 17, and 24 on Tuesday nights from 7:30pm-8:45pm EDT.
All meetings will be hosted by Dr. Wesley Reynolds, director of the Wilbur Fellows Program at the Center, through Zoom. Also joining will be Burke scholar Bruce Frohnen and Johnson scholar Matthew Davis. While it is not necessary to read Leo Damrosch’s book ([link removed]) to attend, if you do obtain the book, please read the prologue through chapter 2 for the first session.
We hope you'll make plans to join us online beginning on Tuesday evening, November 10.
Sincerely,
Annette Kirk, President
The Russell Kirk Center
P.S. Please feel free to share this invitation with friends and colleagues who might like to join in our discussion.
