From tree-planting to banning plastic straws there's plenty to celebrate this month, even in these challenging times.

Dear John
Before we get started on the exciting updates from around our network, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your continued support during these difficult times.

It's been a year like no other, and we couldn't have carried on fighting for people and planet without you. So on behalf of everyone here at Friends of the Earth, thank you.

Whether you've signed a petition, donated to an appeal, set up a regular gift, or been involved in our groups, you've made a huge difference. Thank you for standing with us.
LOCAL GROUP TO PLANT 11,000 TREES
Our Climate Action Group in Eastbourne has just raised an incredible £26,000 to plant 11,000 trees throughout their town.

The group’s only been going for a year, so this is an amazing start towards their goal of making Eastbourne carbon neutral by 2030. Want to find out the secret of their success?

PLASTIC STRAWS BANNED
Single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds are now officially banned in England – a sign that together our campaign to end plastic pollution is having an impact.

Much more government action is needed to save our oceans and rivers. But with people in England using an estimated 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds each year, this ban is very welcome.

THE GREEN MOVEMENT'S SUCCESSES
This month The Guardian ran a piece celebrating the many successes of environmental campaigners over the past 50 years, featuring one of our longest-serving staff members, Joanna Watson.

In difficult times it's really important to remember what can be achieved when we pull together, so it’s well worth a read. Especially if you remember acid rain and CFCs!

DRURIDGE BAY VICTORY
Breaking news. Banks Mining is not going to appeal against the government’s decision to refuse planning permission for a climate-wrecking coal mine at Druridge Bay. It’s the successful end to a long, hard-fought battle by local campaigners which we've been proud to support.
