In the final part of Sounds Like Hate ’s third episode, “Baseless,” we answer some of the most pressing questions about a neo-Nazi group’s violent plots, how law enforcement responds to them, and the future of the organization itself.

Why is the Base, a group of American domestic terrorists, not being investigated with the same rigor as foreign terrorists? As groups like the Base plot violence and national destabilization, are their accelerationist goals and desires to take advantage of lawlessness leading us closer to a civil war?

When researchers at the D-Lab at UC Berkeley conducted extensive data analysis on secret recordings of members and prospective members of the Base, what they found was shocking. This month, NBC <[link removed]>, USA Today <[link removed]>, CNN <[link removed]> and the Atlanta Black Star <[link removed]> reported on Sounds Like Hate ’s findings.

When they thought no one was listening, both members and recruits discussed their plans to amass weapons and ammunition and their intent to organize violent attacks. In those very same conversations, the men often expressed their desire for belonging, for a sense of camaraderie.

These conversations reveal why, even after seven members of the Base were arrested this year, its followers scrambled further underground in an attempt to keep the organization alive. Part III investigates how these extremists use encryption to evade detection and provides insight into the measures law enforcement and policymakers must take to combat the threats posed by the Base’s domestic terror cells.
