** Foundation Board Member Elected to
the National Academy of Medicine
------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Velma McBride Murry, Secretary of our Board of Directors, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine ([link removed]) (NAM) at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. She is the Lois Autrey Betts Chair of Education and Human Development and a Professor at Vanderbilt University.
"We salute with pride the acknowledgement of the genius of the body of work of Dr. Velma McBride Murry and her contribution to the understanding of the power of racial and gender identity to shape cultural identity and confidence," said Board Chair Melvin Ming. "Her election to the National Academy of Medicine will guarantee that a voice will be given to the populations she has studied and her perspectives will influence the science that informs national policy and related practice for the better."

Dr. McBride Murry’s research focuses on examining the significance of context to everyday life experiences of African American families and youth. Specific consideration is given to the implications of racism and other social structural stressors that marginalize families, for cascading influences on parenting and family functioning, mental and physical health, quality of life, and developmental outcomes and adjustment among youth.

She is one of 100 new members with expertise in science, medicine, health, and policy elected to NAM's Class of 2020.

Congratulations Dr. McBride Murry!
